If you’ve ever wondered what those mysterious M1, M2, M3, and M4 options are in your Sony camera’s menu, you're not alone. These “M” settings relate to Memory Recall, and they’re incredibly useful for hybrid shooters, run-and-gun creators, or anyone who wants fast access to custom settings.

Let’s break it down.

What Is Memory Recall?

Sony mirrorless cameras like the A7 series, A6000 series, and A9 series allow you to save specific shooting settings for quick recall. For example, you might save one memory setting for 4K 24fps with a certain picture profile, and another for 1080p 60fps for slow motion. These can be stored in two places:

  • 1 & 2 on your mode dial: Stored directly in your camera’s internal memory.

  • M1 to M4: Stored on your SD card, not in the camera’s internal memory.

Why Use M1 to M4?

If you ever reset your camera, your internal memory settings (1 & 2) are gone. But the ones saved to your SD card (M1–M4) remain — unless you format the card. That makes these external memory slots great for backup or portability between cameras.

How to Set It Up

  1. Adjust your settings the way you like (resolution, frame rate, shutter speed, picture profile, etc.).

  2. Go to the Menu > Camera tab > Page 3 > MR Memory.

  3. Choose a slot — 1, 2, M1, M2, M3, or M4 — and press the center button to save.

  4. To recall settings, go to MR Recall on the same page and select your desired slot.

On some cameras, like the A7 III, you can quickly access 1 & 2 using the top mode dial. For others, like the A6000 series, you'll access them via the MR mode.

Final Tips

  • Save to both internal and SD memory to avoid losing custom setups.

  • Remember: Formatting your SD card will erase M1–M4 settings.

  • Use this feature to quickly switch between video formats, picture profiles, or photo settings without digging through menus.
